Breast Biopsy

Fine-Needle Aspiration of the Breast

What is fine-needle aspiration?
Fine-needle aspiration or biopsy is a simple, cost-effective technique to diagnose many benign and malignant diseases in the breasts, thyroids, and lymph nodes. A thin needle is placed within a palpable lump. If the lump is a simple cyst, the fluid within the cyst is removed into a syringe. If the lump is a solid growth, then the tip of the needle is passed back and forth multiple times obtain cells for further analysis.

Is fine-needle aspiration uncomfortable?
You will probably feel only minor discomfort since the skin over the lump tissue can be numbed.

What are the possible benefits of undergoing this procedure?
It can reduce the need for more extensive surgical procedures. Draining a lump (cyst) is simple and can reduce discomfort and make the lump go away. Solid lumps can be checked for cancer.

How accurate is needle aspiration?
Fine-needle aspiration may not always detect a cancer. However, it is usually done with a physical exam and other tests. If any one of the tests is not normal, a surgical biopsy may be needed.

Are there any risks to this procedure?
The risks are relatively minor, such as bruising in the breast tissue after the needle insertion and minor discomfort. Very rarely, the needle can put air around the lung if it's inserted too deeply beneath the breast. Infections are extremely uncommon.

If the report on the cells in my breast is normal, do I need any further follow-up?
Yes, you should do what your doctor recommends. Another physical exam or mammogram within the next year may be required.
