Endoscopy

Nasolaryngoscopy

What is flexible nasolaryngoscopy?
Flexible nasolaryngoscopy is an examination of your nose, voicebox, and upper respiratory tract. A small, flexible, fiberoptic scope is inserted into one side of the nose so that your doctor can see the curves and small spaces of your nose and larynx.

Vocal Cord GrowthIs the procedure painful?
You may feel a tickling sensation when the scope is first placed inside your nose. Most people don't experience much discomfort after that. Although rare, possible effects include vomiting, bleeding, sneezing, coughing, or gagging.

How do I get ready for the procedure?
There is no preparation for this procedure.

What will happen during the procedure?
Sitting upright, your nose will be sprayed with a decongestant to shrink the nasal passages, and then sprayed with an anesthetic to numb the tissues. The scope will be slid to the back of the nose, and then down the throat to your voice box. Breathing slowly through the mouth, you will be asked to make certain sounds. If mucus blocks the tip of the scope, you'll need to swallow. As the scope is being withdrawn, your nose will be examined.

How long does the procedure last?
Usually just a few minutes. If any significant problems are found, you may need to take medicine or see a nose or throat specialist. You should be able to resume normal activities right away, but avoid eating or drinking until the numbness in your throat has worn off.
